“To be or not to be, that is the question.” A famous quote by William Shakespeare and a question that has racked the brains of far too many philosophers. This question in its essence represents all that one has been through in his life. This question single-handedly gives reference to all the decisions that one has made throughout his life. Each decision is its vaguest form gives us basically two choices. Each decision asks us just two questions. To Be or Not To Be. People throughout their life run behind trivial matters, all in the hope of finding the answer to the one question that has been driving them from day one, ‘What is the reason for their existence?’ I believe that the day that one finds the answer to the question asked by William Shakespeare, is the day that one truly discovers himself.

That’s enough beating around the bush for one day. So let’s head over to the topic in our hands. The question that I’m asking today is, “To B.E or not to B.E.” But in our scenario, the B.E stands for Bachelor of Engineering. So why should you opt for bachelors in engineering or why shouldn’t you opt for it?

To B.E or not to B.E

Let’s start off by mentioning all the advantages of doing a degree in Engineering.  Engineering is that one field that has no boundary or that which knows no limit. One could even say that the entire world runs on the marvels that are created by engineers. Being an engineer means applying all that you’ve learned throughout your life and seeing what comes out of it. To be an engineer, one should be responsible, hardworking, and above all should be able to handle immense pressure without breaking down. The life of an engineer is not an easy one. He/she has to endure immense competition and should be able to manage their work life and family life simultaneously. The biggest advantage of engineering as far as I’m concerned is the variety of option it provides us with. The vast number of engineering courses that are prevalent in our society is mind-boggling. You’re bound to find an engineering course that inspires you.

To B.E or not to B.E

As they say, there’s a yin to a yang. Likewise, engineering too has its share of disadvantages. Let me start off by pointing out the most obvious one. There are far too many engineers. The engineers to job ratio clearly states the fact that the number of jobs available and the number of people with an engineer’s degree are not proportional. In our Indian society, taking an engineer’s degree has become a household tradition. We believe that to be successful in life one must either take an engineer’s degree or become a doctor. A majority of the people prefer the former. Then comes the problem of colleges. The number of engineering colleges in India is far too high. It’s so high that nearly every major city will at least 2 engineering colleges. But the placement in these colleges is horrible. Some of these colleges don’t even offer placements. Only the NIT’s, the IIT’s, and the several other deemed universities offer proper placement. And we all know how hard it is to get into one of these universities. In the end, if you don’t get a job, what’s the use of doing an engineering degree and wasting four years of your life?

I want all of you to remember just one thing, it’s your life. You only get one, so make proper use of it. Follow your passions and be stern on your decisions. Being an engineer is not easy. It’s not meant for everyone. All of us have their own specialities. You just need to find yours and concentrate on developing your skills. Never take a decision just because you’re under tremendous pressure from your family or from your society. You’ll end up regretting that decision. By the time you join college, you should capable enough to think for yourself. If you do take a decision that you’re not a 100% satisfied with, then you won’t be able to enjoy your life. So think a 100, no a 1000 times before you take the decision that’s going to decide your future. Listen to your parents’ advice, but at the same time be bold enough to take your own stand. Do follow these steps and I’m pretty sure you’ll succeed in life.
