Inviting about 250 students from nearby schools as well as its own campus, Lovely Professional University had a joyous celebration for Earth Day 2019 in the Baldev Raj Mittal Unipolis on 22nd March. Organized by LPU’s Educational Tie-Ups and Skill Development Cell, Community Service Cell and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, the primary aim of the event was to generate awareness about the condition of Mother Earth through the Drawing and Painting skills of the participants.

The participants were divided into the following three categories/age groups.

  1. Category – I: Students of Primary class level (up to 5th Standard) for the 1-hour duration.
  2. Category – II: Students from class 6th onwards and up to Secondary class (10th standard) level for 1½ hour duration.
  3. Category – III: Students from Senior Secondary (11th standard) and up to graduation level from college for the 2-hour duration.

The theme of the competition was “Protect Our Species” and the participants were free to choose any of the trailing topics.

  • Sustenance of various ecosystems.
  • Ocean resources (Living & Non-living resources).
  • Impact of Climate change.
  • Deforestation & Afforestation and their significance.
  • Atmospheric Ocean.
  • Polar Science.
  • Sustainable use of natural resources.

The university provided all the participants with drawing sheets, crayons, watercolours and paint brushes, pencils, etc. The competition started around 11 am and the students could be seen thoughtfully painting on the drawing sheets.

While some participants chose to convey the pitiful conditions of various endangered species, others drew the eternal connection human beings share with Mother Earth. The colourful and magnificent illustrations created during the competition led to the portrayal of wise and critical thoughts of the students, thus making it an introspective and peaceful event.

Following the Drawing and Painting Competition, there was an interactive session between the coordinators and the participants from different schools. They shared their healthy experience of coming to LPU and contributing to the celebration. One student even sang a song and delighted the audience.

Dr. Sorabh Lakhanpal, Associate Dean at Division of Student Affairs, then enlightened the students about the significance of Earth Day. He shared his views on why Earth Conversation is essential and should be our priority. He also advised the students about the importance of Time Management in life.

The event was also graced by the benign presence of the Chief Guest, Er. HR Singla, Director General, LPU who instilled in the minds of the students that it is impossible to live without Earth, and hence we should take good care of it. Remembering his childhood, he taught the importance of learning self-love, which is the ultimate gateway to love others as well as Mother Earth.

Dr. Sorabh Lakhanpal acted as the Convener of the event and Dr. Saurabh Satija acted as the Organising Secretary. Mr. Ashok Singh was the Jt. Secretary. The event was coordinated by Narsingh Gupta, Vishal, Saurabh Goswami, and Pardeep Kumar.
