Nothing Lasts Forever

She could feel the warmth as he put his arms around her and whispered the words, “Will you marry me?” All thought was lost to her as continuous flashbacks of images and memories began to play in her head. Ever since she was a little girl, she had always hoped for a romantic proposal from a man she loved. All she could hear was his heartbeat racing against every second that came to pass, and as she pulled her head away from his chest, she realized that her heartbeat seemed to be racing against his. It took her sometime to zone back into reality, but it took her less than a second to wrap herself around him with tears in her eyes.

As they sat down on the sand, they could hear the waves silently changing directions as the moonlight sparkled on the ocean’s beauty. Above them, the sky glittered beautiful with stars, and they  allowed themselves to sink into the moonlit wonder of the night. She could feel the gentle breeze touch her skin, so she held his arms to feel his warmth again. Her eyes locked with his, and all she could she was the reflection of her happiness.

Staring into the ocean, he couldn’t help it but imagine their life together. He took her by the shoulder, kissed her forehead and said, “You are my happiness”. He knew that he didn’t need an answer, nor did he want a reply, because it was evident by the look on her face that she felt the same way.

She rested her head on his shoulder and allowed herself to remember each moment in its perfection. Looking into his eyes she said, “I want this day to be special, I want this day of every year to be as beautiful as now”… and she knew that it would always be.

It was 9:00 am in the morning. She got herself dressed and locked her apartment behind. Driving to the same place every year on this day for the last 5 years, she anticipated the flashbacks and memories, and opened herself up to them. Her mind was always preoccupied on this particular day of the year. She took out the flowers from the backseat of the car, and proceeded to open the gate.

As she sat down looking at what was in front of her, tears fell down her cheeks like they did when she had visited this place last year. And as she placed the flowers down on the stone, she said, “I miss you.”

Forcing herself to stand, she walked back to where her car was. As she closed the gate to the cemetery, she remembered the moment when he had asked her to marry him. And as she got into the car, her heart spoke out, “I do”.
