When talking about the human nervous system, it’s true that the brain is the most vital part, because it is the boss and knows how to make the right decision. However, did you know that spinal cord also has some decision making powers? These are called reflexes. For example, you instantly withdrawing your hand when you touch something too hot. Such signals never reach the brain, because, then it would be too late to withdraw your hand. These impulses which make you react within a fraction of second are guided by your spinal cord.

Did you also know that an injury to the spinal cord can prove to be fatal. The spinal cord does not have the ability to heal itself. Any serious injury results in paralysis below the level of the injury. Hence, the lower the injury is on the spinal cord, the less is the extent of paralysis. Since, no cure for SCI is effective, it is imperative to prevent it and to show our support to those who suffer from it.

LPU-NSS in association with Spinal Cord Injury Association observes 12th October as Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Day, with the intention of increasing awareness amongst the general public. It is presumed that the awareness would facilitate an inclusive life for persons with disability and ensure success of prevention programs. Awareness would help ensure that the people who are unaware of the tragic results of SCI learn about it and make efforts to prevent it.
