…the director’s exploration of nuances left everyone struck by the pettiness Pammi’s bourgeois aspirations.

The last day of six-day theatre festival ‘Natya Mahotsav’ at Lovely Professional University witnessed the staging of the situational Punjabi comedy play ‘Udhara Pati’. Presented by Saarthak Rang Manch, Patiala, the play was directed by Dr. Lakha Lehiri. The play was an adaptation of the Marathi original “Usna Navra”, and laid stress on the importance of truth and morality.

The protagonist of the play, Pammi, is shown as an up-reaching, middle class with pretensions to wealth and a superior lifestyle than her husband can actually afford her. To maintain this projected image, pammi is shown to go humorous lengths. In a particularly tragi-comic moment in the play she makes her husband pretend to be the family cook, while a visiting family friends acts as her husband. The pathos and the comic elements of the play were skilfully brought out by the actors. The witty dialogues and great script had the audience in splits. Yet the director’s exploration of nuances left everyone struck by the pettiness Pammi’s bourgeois aspirations.

LPU Director General Er. H. R. Singla congratulated all the groups and individuals involved with the six day Natya Mahotsav on the flawless conduct of the festival. He also thanked Theatre’s Pupil Association ‘Bohemians’ which played an important role in bringing the six theatre groups to the university.
