Sophomore year is about to begin and you can’t shake this feeling off of you. It is not tangible and there’s no word to exactly specify it. It is just like a whiff of nothingness, even though you recognize its symptoms. When you are supposed to be excited and anticipating the senior year, you’re off and demotivated. You feel stuck in a rut and uninspired from life. The chaos and adrenaline of freshman year is over, yet you are not close to graduating. This is an indescribable feeling, and trust me, it’s bad. Real bad!

The Stage and its effect

This mental and psychological stage during college is often termed as ‘sophomore slump’. You might have heard it in movies or TV shows but ignored it thinking about your exciting life until it hits you. But what is actually causing this sudden lack of inspiration and why do the 2nd year students experience this? At the end of high school, the constant pressure to get into a good college serves us for momentum. When you step into college, you try to adjust and build yourself up, which consumes you. Everything excites you; every club seems interesting and you want to participate in every event. It is a natural human behavior to get attracted to new opportunities when exposed to a new environment.

Back to college

But now, the summer break takes you back to familiarity and gives you a lot of time to think about it. When you step back into college for your sophomore year, you realize there is no next step. While you overindulged yourself in the first year, you got to learn things about people, college, and relationships. After analyzing things for two months, you realize those things don’t matter to your senior self as much as they used to be to the junior hulk. Also, after one year of confusion, you’ve decided your major, and you shut down extra activities. You only attend events you need, work when necessary, and socialize selectively.

Facing it with courage

But the legend of sophomore slump doesn’t end here! Students during this stage are summoned by the reflections of reality. They face the non-exciting aspects and truths of life that depress them even more. The worry about taxes, bills, insurances and building an independent and successful life is always on your mind. If you are experiencing any of these feelings – blame it on the slump. Flow with it and soon it will be over like it never happened. As it’s said – Everything happens for a reason!
