On 19th December 2016, students from the department of Journalism and Film Production, Lovely Professional University participated in a workshop entitled MOJO Journalism, hosted by Daily World (an international newspaper publisher)  in Chandigarh, Punjab. The purpose of this workshop was to teach the students about upcoming media and new technologies that are used in journalism, one of them being the mobile devices or our smartphones that we carry every day. MOJO short for Mobile Journalism, which is the new emerging form of news media in India and trending across the globe, is a method in which we distribute news in the community through our smartphones in a quick and easy manner.

The main mentor for this workshop was none other than globally accredited investigative journalist, and FOX featured columnist Kal Korff. Breaking the ice with a funny introduction and a few jokes, Mr. Korff started the workshop by explaining common terms used in journalism. He then asked us to conduct an interview to be captured by a smartphone and later edited to make a broadcast quality episode.

Several technical aspects of the video were discussed which included Lighting, Audio, Noise, Colors and Effects. After editing the recorded interview using iMovie, the students finished their project by compressing and preparing the video for online upload. Mr. Korff discussed his experiences working as an Author and Columnist at Daily World. A citizen of California, he had been working in India for 7+ years and had been part of various organizations across the world. He shared with the students the highs and lows of his journey and the comic experiences he had had as a foreigner in India.

This was followed by an interactive session with the Editor in Chief of Daily World, Manish Tiwari, and HS Gujral, the CEO of Daily World (India Operations). It was an interesting and fruitful session as the potential journalists expressed their opinions and learned from the experienced professionals. Daily World being the first International Newspaper from India, the exposure provided the students an insight into the nitty-gritty of the business and understand the challenges of a pioneer.

Daily World finished the students’ visit with a tour of their Chandigarh Office, during which they  presented their shows and some of the stories they had featured. It was an incredible experience that will be forever etched in the minds of the students fortunate enough to be on that visit.
