Lovely Professional University (LPU) has achieved a historic milestone by securing the position of First Runner-Up for the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Sports Trophy 2023. This remarkable feat marks the first time a private university has attained such recognition since the trophy’s inception nearly seven decades ago, in 1956. Additionally, LPU’s students have garnered further acclaim being the recipient of the esteemed Arjuna Award, the most significant honour in sports for outstanding performance.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, has announced LPU as one of the top two recipients of the MAKA Sports Trophy for 2023 during the ‘National Sports Awards’ affirmation ceremony. This accomplishment not only adds another prestigious feather to LPU’s cap but also solidifies its pioneering status in the field of sports.
LPU is also proud to share that Nasreen, a talented Kho Kho player from the university and MPEd first year student, has been declared winner of the prestigious Arjuna Award. This recognition underscores LPU student’s exceptional achievements and contributions to the sport.
In January 2024, LPU student Nasreen will have the distinct honour of receiving the Arjuna Award from the President of India during the national sports award ceremony. This momentous occasion highlights the university’s commitment to fostering sporting excellence and promoting a culture of achievement.
Founder Chancellor of LPU & Rajya Sabha Member Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal extends his heartfelt congratulations to all those involved in LPU’s sporting endeavours, including students, staff members, coaches, and stakeholders. Dr Mittal also emphasizes the importance of maintaining the same level of dedication and striving to secure the top position among all government and private universities in the country.
The National Sports Awards are presented annually to recognize and reward outstanding achievements in sports. These prestigious accolades include the ‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award,’ the ‘Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in Sports and Games,’ the ‘Dronacharya Award for outstanding coaches in Sports and Games,’ and the ‘Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime achievement in Sports and Games.’
The MAKA Trophy is awarded to the overall top-performing university in inter-university tournaments. This year, a large number of applications/nominations were received for these awards, which were meticulously evaluated by the esteemed ‘Selection Committee’ headed by Justice A. M. Khanwilkar (Retd. Judge) of the Supreme Court of India, along with distinguished sportspersons, experienced sports journalists, and sports administrators.
LPU also takes immense pride in its association with renowned sports personalities, including Neeraj Chopra- the exceptional javelin thrower; Bajrang Punia- the accomplished wrestler; Jaismine-the skilled boxer; Indian Hockey Team Members; and, many other illustrious sports men & women.
