On a Rainy Night

The gusty wind accompanied by the continuous rainfall made it difficult for her to balance the umbrella she was holding so dearly. Hasting away to the crowded metro, she tried to find a corner to adjust herself of the mess caused by the harsh climate, which was prevailing for almost a week. She tried to call him up repeatedly to let him know about her situation, but she couldn’t get any reception, silently cursing the climate she slid her phone into her pocket.

After almost an hour, the rain started to settle down and the wind calmed its course. Everyone fled in a hurry so as to avoid the next rain that might hit the streets. She hurriedly took her stuffs and proceeded towards the main street in order to catch a cab. Just as she was about to signal a cab to stop, she heard her phone beep. She took her phone out and read the text, “I hope you are alright. We might have to cancel our dinner plans, some emergency came up. I need you to take a cab and come directly to street 69 right now”. As soon as she read the last line, she immediately dialed his number but there was still no reception. She was worried sick as she had no idea what had happened, without thinking further, she hastily took a cab and proceeded to street 69.

She pleaded with the cab driver to drive faster as entangled thoughts of probable situations played inside her head. She wondered why he had asked her so suddenly to reach street 69, the place where it all started. All the thoughts running through her head couldn’t help her reach a conclusion as she was occupied counting the minutes to reach the place.

As she got out of the cab, all she could see was the empty deserted street with just the lamp post on either side of the road igniting a very dim light, which covered only a small part of the street. The rain started pouring in and she was worried about the situation she was in. Before she could pull out her phone to call him, she saw a dark human-like figure approaching her. Squinting her eyes she tried to look more carefully, seconds after, she was relieved to see who it was. Before she could say anything, he held her hands and asked her, “Let’s dance in the rain”. She was baffled but continued anyway.

The moment they began to dance everything and anything started to take place. The 1st song they ever danced to started playing at a distance, lights began to hit them from all direction as they moved in perfect sync, the rain started pouring in more heavily. Drenched in the rain she was shocked and confused at the same time, so she looked him in the eye and asked what was all this. He didn’t say anything, and continued to dance in the rain with her.

They danced for a very long time, and as he freed himself off of her, he fell on his knees. She couldn’t believe what was happening, and it was all so sudden that she couldn’t help the tears running down her cheeks. As he took her hands into his, she could feel something poking her shoulder. She tried to ignore it and focus herself into him, but she couldn’t shake away the feeling. She tried to move her shoulders but it didn’t help. Finally, when she couldn’t take it anymore she tried to close her eyes and think of something else.

When she finally opened her eyes, she found herself laying down on the sofa, and saw her pet dog touching her shoulder continuously. The realization of her dream made her sad to come back to reality. But she couldn’t help but realize that she just had a beautiful dream. As she got herself out of the sofa, she looked out the window and saw the rain pouring down heavily. She closed her eyes and thought to herself, “On a rainy night”, and smiled.
