Rahul was woken up at exactly 12 a.m. on Jan 1st, by his vibrating phone. His younger brother Kunal had posted “Happy New Year” on his Facebook profile. Rahul, a 4th year engineering student at IIT Mumbai couldn’t help but think about his childhood when New Year wishes were not just messages. Memories of making cards every new year for his family and friends came flooding back, bringing a sense of nostalgia. He recalled the excitement he used to get up with, early on the 1st of every childhood Jan, after a happily tiring family party the evening before, to distribute the greeting cards he’d made. He couldn’t shake off an unsettling sense of loss and disconnect. Yeah..some happy new year..

In today’s ultra-modern world, we often tend to maintain our relationships over social media sites and applications. We forget our near and dear ones and start to attach more importance to our online friends. Though it is great to be well connected socially, we must not forget our family and real life friends in the quest to become a guy/girl with 4k+ friends on Facebook and Whatsapp. Although there is no denying the fact that these applications are useful but we must make sure we use them and not make them our life.

This New Year let us vow to make time for our family and celebrate festivals and occasions in the real world and not just with our online friends and in status updates. Trust me, it will not only make your family happy but also give you a sense of satisfaction and true happiness.
