When Dreams Collide with Reality

….dreams too collide with reality, and when that happens, the feeling is something out of the world.

Yogi was always fascinated by the novels he’d read in all the free time he got after college and the household chores. In between the overly tight schedule in college, and the activities at home, he’d spend all the remaining time reading novels of vast genres. His fascination for novels led him to dream of becoming an author someday, where his name would appear in front of a book. He would spend sleepless nights trying to get into the phase where he would completely erase his existence from reality and focus his mind on ideas and plots for a book which he’d write one day.

He was just in his freshmen year in college, and instead of wandering around talking to people and making friends like the normal kids, his eyes were always locked on the pages of the novel he was carrying. Luckily for someone like him who could hardly make any friends, his high-school mates Sandeep and Akshay were also part of the same college he was attending. The duo would often invite Yogi to hang-out with them, but to no avail as he was mostly immersed in his novels the entire time. On reaching home that day, he got himself mixed up in an episode his parents were having, which made him skip dinner due to the ill-appetite triggered by the situation.

The indication of the morning sun in his room allowed him to ponder over a promise he made to himself some days back. He woke up in haste, and took a pen and a notebook from the drawer and started scribbling something. ‘When dreams collide with reality’, that was the name of the novel he’d work on for the days to come.

Three months had already passed since he started writing. Every day and night he would put his mind and soul into writing the novel which could hopefully be great enough to be read by the people around the world. Today was the day he put away his pen, and complete the final page of his novel. With little knowledge about what to do next, he decided to take the pages bundled together and get some feedbacks from the people in the library, because that was the only place where readers would rendezvous. On reaching the library, he went around searching for the reading room when suddenly his phone started ringing. “Hello mom”..some 20 seconds later, he rushed out from the library.

Exactly 8 hours later, the doctor came out of the ICU and assured them that everything would be fine. Yogi wanted to meet his brother, but he needed his rest for the time being. It was not a good day for his family as his younger brother met with an accident and had to be admitted to the ICU. With the doctor’s assurance they calmed themselves pretty okay.

He walked to the nearest canteen to get a cup of coffee when suddenly it hits him that he had forgotten the bundled pages of the novel he had written. In such haste he called up a cab and rushed to the library. A bad day it was indeed. The novel was nowhere to be found, he was lost and hurt. Thoughts of recollection was running through his head trying to rewrite what he had written, but to no avail. It took him 3 months to complete the one thing he always dreamt of, but now it was too late.

5 days later, Yogi’s younger brother got discharged from the hospital and was recovering quite well. It was a normal morning like any other day, he got himself up from the sofa and headed towards the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee. Reading through the morning newspaper he came across an article which made him literally paralyzed, he couldn’t move nor speak a word. On the 1st page of the newspaper it was written in bold, “When dreams collide with reality”, it was just too sudden and surprising to see the name of the novel he had written. On reading further, he started crying tears of joy, “This work is filled with ideas and plots that are really fresh and beautiful. Bundled pages kept together in a really rowdy way was found some days ago in the library. The author of this work piece kindly contact this number at the earliest”- (879xxxxxxx- Mind-Works publication). Mind-Works publishing firm was one of the most sought after publishers all over the region. He couldn’t believe what was happening, he was confused and shocked at the same time.

After a while, he composed himself from the shock and tried to introspect over what had just happened. 3 months spent on writing this novel, and he had no idea that he was the living example of what his novel stood for. He had just lived through every word written by him in the novel, and he was filled with immense happiness to know that dreams too collide with reality, and when that happens, the feeling is something out of the world.
