Cancer refers to the disease in which there is an uncontrolled growth of body cells which leads to damaging of body tissues and organs. The most common cancers around the world are cancers of the breast, stomach, lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. Though the prognosis for the affected is far better today than it was ever in the past, it is still a dreaded condition. To keep the fight against cancer alive, and keep those struggling with it strong, is an ongoing challenge for society.
Towards this cause World Cancer Day was established by the Paris Charter adopted at the World Summit against Cancer for the New Millennium in 2000. It is observed every year on 4th February. The World Cancer Day organizers work for improvement in early diagnosis processes in order to give the patients better chances of beating cancer.
The campaign strives to create general cancer awareness among people, as one of best methods to cure this disease is by detecting it in its initial stages. It urges people to go for screenings and diagnostic tests if they encounter any of the symptoms of this disease.
Between 2016 and 2018, the campaign is taking place under the tagline ‘We can. I can.’ The campaigners ask people to come together and help cancer patients who often become financially and economically weak after battling this disease.
