On International Women’s Day 2017, LPU celebrated the ‘Spirit of Womanhood’ at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium with more than 3500 faculty and staff members. An all women NGO ‘WE –Women Enlightenment’ joined hands with LPU in the celebration of this occasion.
A gender sensitization skit, a flash mob, extempore role plays, and video messages from LPU Women of Pride were part of the celebrations. LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs. Rashmi Mittal’s message said, “Every woman is capable of making a valuable contribution to society. We must pledge to provide them with the opportunities to do so.”
Informing the audience about women WE (Women Enlightenment), founders Dr. Shruti Shukla and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ms. Deepika Singh said, “‘WE’ is committed to encourage and support creative initiatives, personal growth, mental and emotional health as well as education for women, refugees, ethnic minorities and disadvantaged groups. We provide them opportunities to formulate their own needs within their communities without enforcing outsider beliefs upon them. Our ultimate goal is equality for all.”
An award ceremony to honor 12 ‘Women of Substance’ who have made an impact on society with their services was also held. LPU Director General Er. HR Singla presented the awards to – Director, Ajit Group of Publications Ms. Gurjot Kaur; Miss India Canada Tanpreet Parmar; Eminent educator and administrator Prof Dr. (Mrs.) Atima Sharma Dwivedi; Director at Shivam Fertility & IVF Centre Dr. Kumud Pasricha; Eminent educator in the field of Fine Arts, Principal APJ College Dr. Sucharita; Chief Medical Officer (Jalandhar) Dr. Maninder Minhas; Co-founder of NGO ‘Aghaaz’ Ms Nidhi Kohli; President of National Association of Reproductive Child Health of India (NARCHI) Dr. Sushma Chawla; Director of Dainik Savera Times Mrs Vani Vij; Producer, Director from the field of Media & Education Ms. Ramanpreet Kaur; Elitist international make-up artist Ms. Ritu Kolentine; and, Electronic media personality Ms. Seema Soni.
The high point of the event was 72 years old Dr. Sushma Chawla taking the stage to demonstrate a little ‘dancersize’. There wasn’t a woman present in the hall who didn’t want to grow up to be like the charming and lively Dr. Chawla.
