Determined to provide the fittest & finest athletes to the country, Lovely Professional University (LPU) has now got 5 of its students to enter Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season- 8. The season is slated to commence from 22nd December 2021 at Bengaluru in Karnataka. Four out of the total participating 12 Team Owning Groups esteemed the prowess of LPU Students. Selector Groups are Telugu Titans, Tamil Thalaivaas, Gujarat Giants and Haryana Steelers. Many of the overseas players from Iran, South Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and more are also to participate. The matches are supposed to be telecast live by Star Sports channel.
LPU student Surinder Singh has been valued by Telugu Titans at a price of Rs 55 lakhs; Sagar has been valued by Tamil Thalaivaas at Rs 8 lakhs; Rakesh Sangroya will play for Gujarat Giants for Rs 7.98 lakhs; whereas, Meetu Sharma and Jaideep Dahiya are preferred by Haryana Steelers for Rs 7.98 lakhs each. LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal congratulated the professionally sound students and wished their teams a roaring success and career ahead.
Indian kabaddi had taken a big leap with its 1st professional league in the year 2014, where some well-known entrepreneurs had shown their interest as team owners. The league has the backing of the International Kabaddi Federation, Asian Kabaddi Federation and Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India.
Kabaddi is a genuine indigenous sport of India and particularly very popular in villages, as it was long seen as a sport oozing from the rural side. It slowly faded and was dwarfed by games like cricket; however, with the launch of Pro Kabbadi League opinion has been changed favouringly towards this game. It has now ushered as an eminent game with mammoth broadcasting, revamped rules, and lucrative awards.
Illustrative, ‘Tamil Thalaivas’ is a Kabaddi team based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The team is co-owned by actors Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, film producer Allu Aravind and more. ‘Gujarat Giants’ has an objective of promoting the culture of sports through Adani Wilmar Ltd. ‘Haryana Steelers’ is owned by JSW Sports, part of the Jindal South West (JSW) Group- more than 11 billion USD conglomerate. For the auctioning process, players were divided into 4 categories- A, B, C, D. Further in each category the players were divided into their playing roles as Raiders, All-rounders, or Defenders. The base price for category A was Rs 30 lakhs, for B 20 lakhs, for C 10 lakhs and D as Rs 6 lakhs.
