‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, the famous slogan given to India by the then Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965, at a public gathering at Ramlila Maidan, Delhi, highlights the significance of the armed forces and farmers in our daily lives. To give due respect to the farmers, December 23rd is celebrated as “Kisan Diwas” throughout the country. It is the birthday of Former Prime Minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh who was born on December 23rd 1902. Chaudhary Charan Singh was the fifth Prime Minister of the India who served country as Prime Minister from 28 July 1979 until 14 January 1980.He was primarily a farmer himself and his personal life-style was extremely simple which reflected in his efforts towards the improvement of an Indian farmer. He is credited for a slew of agrarian reforms and new policies being introduced in India.

No human life is possible without farmers. As can be seen from ancient times, the first job humans started to do after gaining intelligence was farming in order to eat. Today farmers are going through different problems because of climatic changes, economic problems etc. It is our moral duty to help them in difficult times and ensure they are getting their fair share according to their produce.

On this day various agricultural events, seminars, competitions and debates are organized to deliberate the issues surrounding farmers and farming. Different agricultural societies celebrate this day with great pomp and joy.

Let’s all take this day to be grateful to all the farmers everywhere. There is no greater hand than the one that feeds. Jai Kisan!
