* Tariq Khan talked about importance of neutrality, communication skills, and emotional intelligence in a mediator’s role
LPU’s law school hosted a workshop on “Careers in Arbitration and Mediation.” Guest speaker was Tariq Khan, a distinguished expert in the field, registrar, international arbitration and mediation center in Hyderabad. The workshop aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the scope and opportunities available in arbitration and mediation.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjay Modi welcomed Tariq Khan. Dr. Modi said Mr. Khan is a well-respected figure in the legal community, known for his expertise in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and his contributions to legal literature.
Mr. Khan outlined the increasing relevance of arbitration and mediation in today’s legal environment, emphasizing their role in resolving disputes efficiently and effectively. He also discussed the increasing power and preference for mediation as an effective means of resolving disputes. He highlighted how mediation encourages collaboration and communication between parties, leading to mutually beneficial outcomes.
In addition, the course gave participants an understanding of mediators and the abilities needed for successful mediation. Mr. Khan underscored the importance of neutrality, communication skills, and emotional intelligence in a mediator’s role. The speaker detailed several advantages of mediation, like generally being more affordable than litigation, quicker resolution compared to traditional court processes, protecting sensitive information from public exposure, and having greater control over the process and outcomes.
A crucial distinction was made between “dispute” (a specific disagreement) and “conflict” (a broader context involving interpersonal tensions). Understanding this difference is vital for legal professionals. Mr. Khan emphasized the compelling reasons to consider a career in arbitration and mediation. As organizations increasingly prefer ADR for its efficiency, the demand for skilled professionals in this field is rising.
This workshop enhanced understanding of the latest trends and careers in arbitration and mediation. The workshop also provided a platform for discussion and networking for young professional law students.
