Well, to all the science students out there, hello and welcome here! Isn’t it astonishing that we all end up at the same place at the same time? Three years is all it takes to make a significant difference in your life and turn your voyage in a specific direction. Today, I, a final year student, am going to give you an insight into one of the 200 courses at LPU i.e. B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology.
Biotechnology is the branch of science combining biology with modern-day technologies to produce and discover elements for the betterment of today and the days to come. Anyone with PCMB (Physics+ Chemistry+ Maths/Biology) in their high schooling can get admitted to this course. The compilation of subjects in this course includes (changes may be applicable):
First semester – Cell Biology and its laboratory, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, and its laboratory, Basic Bioinstrumentation, Basic Inorganic Chemistry and its laboratory, Communication Skills-I.
Second semester – Microbiology, and its laboratory, Basic Genetics, and its laboratory, Numerical methods in Biology, Workshop on Worksheets and Presentations, Environmental Studies, Basic Organic Chemistry, and its laboratory, Communication Skills-II.
Third semester – Workshop on Experimental Design and Technical Writing, Human Genetics, Introduction to Immunology and its laboratory, Fundamentals of Molecular Biology and its laboratory, Macromolecular Structure and Function, Foundations of Psychology-I, Systemic Physiology.
Fourth semester – Fundamentals of Recombinant DNA Technology, Fundamentals of Biostatistics, Microbial Genetics, Concepts in Bioprocess Engineering, Genetic Engineering laboratory, Biosafety Bioethics IPR and Patents, Analytical Skills, Foundations of Psychology-II.
Fifth semester – Biotechnology and Human Welfare, Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, and its laboratory, Soft Skills, Issues and Applications of Psychology-I, Developmental Biology, and its laboratory, Animal Physiology.
The main feature of this course is that it covers every possible domain of Biology ranging from all the broader subjects like Biochemistry, Genetics, and Microbiology to narrowing them down to specific subjects giving you a thorough knowledge of the entire class of Biotechnology. Also, Biotechnology has evolved in recent times amid the COVID-19 scare and has emerged to be significant in the field of research and vaccine development.
Having studied this subject for three years nearing my graduation in the same, I will suggest the ones in the biology field and confused regarding what to pursue in their UG. B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology will encourage you to take up your PG in the same subject or maybe in any of the diversifiable options available. All the best for your future!
