The Joy of Eating Indian Food

I was in the States for almost a year through the ‘study abroad’ program, and it was great. But I missed flavor in my life, every day for that one year. And how I envied those who got to eat Indian food every day.

I know burgers and pizzas look tempting, but trust me, these are a far cry from the American staple, at least the Indian adaptations we prefer. Americans eat very plain food, all they use is salt and black pepper for cooking (or that is what it felt like). For my first semester, I stayed on campus and ate that plain food without complaining. It was sweet breakfast and spiceless meals for 6 months straight. Yes, Americans eat ‘sweet’ breakfast! Yes, ‘SWEET’! Even their Chinese is sweet.

Well, my first semester passed and I met a few Indians from down south and shifted in with them. On my first day there, they treated me to home made ‘Hyderabadi Biryani’. Anyone who says men don’t know how to cook, has to meet my friends. Could those guys cook or what? My tummy was immensely pleased with the shift and my heart full of nostalgia for my mother’s sambar and dosas.

Talking of nostalgia, would it be crazy if I said I feel a wee bit nostalgic about my time in the States and even their plain food? It was a great time I had there, murder of the tastebuds notwithstanding.
