Imagine going to class on your very first day of college as a freshman. You see a few people chattering and some of them silent. You don’t know who to talk to or sit beside. Chill! This happens with almost everyone in their freshman year. This is mostly because you don’t know what to say or where to begin. Here are some tips you might want to consider making friends in your freshman year:
- Freshman Induction
Freshman induction is organized every year by our university to help freshers break the ice and get used to the surroundings. This is a great time to meet new people who might possibly share the same interests as you. This induction program is only once a year so, make the most it!
- Be yourself
This is the most important part, being yourself. There’s no point in surrounding yourself with people who don’t know the real you. Act as natural as possible and people will like you for who you are. Even if you lie, how long can you fake it?
- Roommates
When you’re not in college, you spend your time in your dorm room. This is where you find friends like family. In the beginning, you will exchange names and interests which then picks up pace and escalades to decorating your dorm room together and possibly gossip or binge watch Netflix till midnight. Not to forget, you will also end up cooking and sharing late-night Maggi!
- Clubs and events
Joining a club or attending an on-campus event might work wonders in meeting new people and building connections. If you’re in a club, its members might share common interests as you because that’s why you’re in the same club right?
- Classrooms
Maybe you talk with someone because you couldn’t understand a class on a particular day or maybe because you might have a group project submission. Whatever might be the reason, classrooms are filled with people you’ll see almost every day. If you manage to get along well with them, you might even end up sitting next to each other for the rest of the college year!
The whole idea of your freshman year might be a little intimidating, but don’t let it get the best of you. The friends you make in college will most probably stick with you throughout your life. So, get yourself out there! What are you waiting for?
