One of the faculty members, Dr. Amit Srivastava, Professor and Head (HoS), School of Civil Engineering received financial support worth 25 lakhs from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to work on a research project namely “Geotechnical & Geological Studies of an active landslide in Himachal Pradesh for vulnerability mapping and risk assessment.” Co-PIs of the project are Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, ED-LFTS, Dr. Janaki Swain, COD, Water resource and Environment Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and Dr. Rajesh Singh, HOD, Division of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Sanctioning of the project was based on a competitive bid and approximately 25 faculty members from IITs, NITs and reputed institutions participated and presented their proposals. The duration of the project is 2 years and it involves the following objectives to be fulfilled:
- Identification of active landslide and performing its detailed geotechnical and geological study of an active landslide
- Vulnerability mapping, both environmental (physical) as well as socio-economic vulnerability of the active landslide in study area
- Quantification of uncertainty in modeling, prediction as well as in the risk assessment and management process of the active landslide in the study area
The project will involve majorly site visits, Laboratory and field testing, computational work through numerical modeling procedures using software like GeoSlope for stability analysis, DAN-W for landslide runoff analysis, ArcGIS for image processing and landslide vulnerability mapping, Event Tree Analysis for risk analysis etc.
There is a provision of Project Assistant (PA) to financially support students willing to work in the project and to avail learning opportunities and deliver the expectations. For further details on the project, one may contact Dr. Amit Srivastava via [email protected]
