The sport of field hockey has been designated as our nation’s official national sport. The title of “national sport” can be awarded to a game due to its popularity or historical significance. Both of these factors are considered when awarding this title. The sport of hockey has a long and illustrious history, which is one of the reasons why India considers it to be the “National Game.” There is another clear reason for naming this sport the national sport of the country, and that is the pride that is always inspired by the citizens of the country.
Bobby Singh Dhami and Pawan, both hockey players at LPU, helped the Indian Men’s Hockey Team beat Poland 6-4 in the finals of the FIH Hockey 5s in Lausanne to win the tournament for the first time ever. A super-quick, very skillful, and short style of hockey, Hockey5s, was first played in preparation for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. It was meant to be adaptable to a variety of surfaces, surroundings, and spaces. Hockey5s is an invasion game where two teams, each with four players on the field and one goalie, try to score more goals than the other team.
The Indian Hockey Team defeated Malaysia and Poland by scores of 7-3 and 6-2, respectively, to make it to the final of the first-ever FIH Hockey5s tournament. India faced Poland once more in the championship match. At the beginning of the first half, Poland put a lot of pressure on India, and they were able to capitalize on the opportunities they were given to extend their lead to three goals within the first five minutes of the match. The goals were scored by Mateusz Nowakowski, Robert Pawlak, and Wojciech Rutkowski.
However, India soon replied and drew back two goals in a row to make the score 2-3 at the end of the first half. In the eleventh minute of the second half, LPU student Boby Singh Dhami scored the equaliser for the Indian side, and Raheel, who was the leading goalscorer of the competition, went on to give India the lead in the thirteenth minute. The second half got off to a good start for the Indian team. The score was brought up to five by Raheel in the seventeenth minute, but Poland was able to cut the deficit in half thanks to a goal scored by Captain in the eighteenth minute. Even so, it was LPU student Bobby Singh Dhami who scored a goal in the last few seconds before the final whistle. This helped India win the first-ever FIH Hockey5s title with a nail-biting 6-4 win.
During that time, Pawan, a student at LPU who also plays goalie for India, made several great saves in the last few minutes of the game, which led to India’s nail-biting 6-4 win over Poland.
