Who could forget the historic Bronze medal won by the Indian Men’s Hockey Team at the Tokyo Olympics in the year 2020? Every Indian will always hold a special place in their hearts for a moment that will go down in the history books of Indian sporting history and mark as one of the most successful Indian Olympic campaigns in recent history. A year later, the Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG) have served as a reminder that sports are not a mathematical equation but a dynamic and ever-changing experience.

Following the conclusion of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the performance of the Indian Men’s Hockey Team has once again left us in awe. The magnificent performance that the Men’s Hockey Team put on at the Birmingham CWG 2022 earned them the Silver medal, and it completely won over our hearts. Our LPU fraternity is filled with pride and glory as a result of the fact that eight of the medalists on the Indian Hockey Team are Vertos.

LPU students forming a big part of the Indian team are of different professional programmes. Five of them, Captain Manpreet Singh, Vice-Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Singh and Varun Kumar are pursuing MBA programmes at LPU.  Hardik Singh is following MA; whereas, Jugraj Singh and Gurjant Singh are in BA programmes. All of them played well to their skills & strength, and exhibited the best of hockey for onlookers to applaud their shots, dribbles, lofts, pushes, passes through smooth flow of sticks.

The 31st of July marked the beginning of the Indian Men’s National Hockey Team’s campaign for the Commonwealth Games. They competed against Team Ghana and won their match with an overwhelming score of 11-0. The following match, which was played against England on August 1, ended in a draw at 4-4. On August 3, Team India competed in a match against Canada and they registered a victory with 8-0 verdict. On August 4, the final match of the pool was played, and it was against Wales. Team India won the match easily with a scoreline of 4-1. In the semi-final match, Team India competed against Team South Africa. On August 6, the match was played, and Team India emerged victorious with a 3-2 score.

A huge round of applause goes out to the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. Eight Vertos have made significant contributions to this achievement. All of us here at LPU would like to extend our congratulations and best wishes to the hockey stars.
