All India Inter University ‘Tug of War’ Championship 2016-17 At LPU

More than 40 universities from all across India registered for the seven-day All India Inter University Tug of War (Men & Women) Championship (2016-17) that were held at LPU. The participation was in five weight categories. Of the championship games, two games each were indoor and outdoor for both men and women and one outdoor game of men and women mixed teams, under different weight categories. 14 technical experts, observers and referees were appointed for the smooth conduct of the championship. Conducted by the Tug of War Federation of India (TWFI), the tournament lasted 7 days, from 20th Dec to 26th December 2016.

On the opening day, LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal declared the historic championship open, and also hoisted the flags of the organizer AIU, and host LPU, at the sports venue. The first show-game was held between the teams of Guru Gobind Singh Indra Prasth University, New Delhi and Punjabi University, Patiala.

Congratulating all the participants, team managers, coaches and authorities of AIU and TWFI for including the ancient game of India in the sports events of AIU, Chancellor Mr. Mittal said, “ It is indeed a matter of pride for us to host one of the oldest games of the world at our campus. This game of strength used to be a part of Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920. A hard try has since then been going on to get it included in the Olympics once again. You all are fortunate to participate in this historic game, hopefully you will be the first participants to take the game to Olympic Games-2024.” Mr. Mittal added, “We always want to organize all types of events, as entrusted upon us in diverse fields, for the benefit of students in common. A few days back, LPU also came forward to organize the first ever Qawwali competition for AIU.”

The Chairman of the Technical Committee of the championship, Mr. Madan Mohan informed all gathered that many international and national federations were adopting this game that is a combination of technique and power.
