“LPU brought us the prestigious opportunity right at the campus and we proved our worth by emerging victorious in a competition with 30 more scholarship aspirants.” – Arun and Gagandeep
Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), Canada, has granted a scholarship of approximately Rs. 80 lakh to two LPU students. Arun Kumar and Gagandeep Kaur of the final semester, B. Pharmacy program of LPU, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, have been selected to conduct their research and pursue their post graduate studies in M.Sc Bio-Chemistry at MUN. LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal congratulated the meritorious and hard-working students and wished them the best in scaling newer heights.
Sharing the details of the scholarship, Director of the Internationalization Office of MUN, Ms. Sonja Knutson said that LPU students have been selected as Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Diamond Jubilee Scholarship Program students. The total value of the two-year scholarship is approximately $50,000 per student. In addition, the QEII scholars will also receive $5,000 in fellowship funding per year per student during the two year period. As QE II scholars, students will be part of the master’s program at the university for two years (September 2016-August 2018). They will be registered as full-time students and have complete access to all the student services and recreational facilities. They will also be participating in local leadership and community engagement activities.
Arun (from the border area between Haryana and Rajasthan) and Gagandeep (from Kolkata, West Bengal) said, “Our joy knows no bounds. This scholarship is our ticket to a brighter future. LPU brought us the prestigious opportunity right at the campus and we proved our worth by emerging victorious in a competition with 30 more scholarship aspirants. We are thankful to Prof Dr Sukhinder Kaur of MUN who identified competence in us for pursuing research work in Canada for the general benefit of human beings world over.”
Talking about their research, Arun and Gagandeep also said, “Obesity is on the rise all over the world. It is associated with Type 2 diabetes -a medical disorder that includes hypertension, insulin resistance, central obesity, cardiovascular disease and more. Several drugs are used to treat Type 2 diabetes but most have side effects. Thus, there is an urgent need for alternate therapy to tackle this disease. Natural health products have gained much interest in the recent years. One such health product is flax, which is grown in abundance in Canada. We will help in investigating the regulation of cholesterol metabolism by working on this. Technically speaking we will work on diets rich in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.”
