Two of the LPU BTech CSE students, Rithik Sharma (Batch 2022) and Ashar Khan (Batch 2021) have been selected for the prestigious ‘Google Summer of Code 2020’ program. The GSoC 2020’ Program is a global program, which selects university student developers from around the world. For this 16th edition of GSoC, 199 top Mentoring Organizations had reviewed 8,902 applications, submitted by 6,626 students from 121 countries. LPU students are now to contribute to open source projects under lucrative stipend.
Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open-source organization on a 3-month programming project during their break from the institution. Students work with a mentor and become a part of the open-source community. Many become lifetime open source developers, too.
While congratulating the selected students, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal shared: “This year LPU students have perfectly utilized the COVID 19 Lockdown period by keeping their spirits up. Their mentors at LPU always guide them to think big and on positive lines to ever excel others, whatever the situation maybe.”
During the ‘Community Bonding’ phase of near one-month (May 4, 2020 – June 1, 2020), students are learning more about the organization’s community. In the ‘Coding’ phase of near 3 months (June 1, 2020 till August 24, 2020), students code the summer away. During this timeline, students spend the summer break in writing code and learning about open source development, along with earning a stipend. In fact, 686 open source organizations have been a part of GSoC since 2005. These organizations are bringing new, excited developers into their communities and the world of open source.
