The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organizes World Environment Day, which is the largest international day dedicated to the environment since 1973 and has been observed on June 5, 2022. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the deteriorating conditions of the environment and to encourage people all over the world to take positive actions for the environment so that they can contribute to the creation of a better future. The phrase “Only One Earth” will serve as the guiding principle for this year’s festivities. This was also the tagline for the conference that took place in Stockholm in 1972, which is where the global event that takes place every year on June 5 was initially established.
Sweden will play host to the World Environment Day celebration in 2022. “Only One Earth” is the tagline for the campaign, and “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature” is the focus of the initiative. Many millions of people all over the world take part in the festivities. Volunteers from the LPU NSS marked World Environment Day 2022 by planting 650 plant saplings in Jalandhar, Punjab, to make a positive contribution to the improvement of the local environment.
When it is done in the right way, planting trees is considered to be one of the most interesting and eco-friendly activities that individuals can take part in to assist in the preservation of the world. The benefits that trees offer, both in the short and long term, are numerous. The benefits of planting trees/plant saplings are as follows: –
- Without trees, human communities are incomplete. Because of their medicinal and life-giving capabilities, trees line streets, parks, playgrounds, and backyards.
- One piece of research found that one acre of forest may produce up to 4 tonnes of oxygen while absorbing up to 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which is enough to provide food and shelter for approximately 20 people for an entire year.
- Planting trees provides people with a sense of success while protecting the environment. Trees play a vital role in one’s youth and family history since they grow and evolve with them. People create an emotional bond with the plants they plant.
When people were confined in cages, the natural world was given a chance to recover, and there is evidence that the air quality increased during this time. During the lockdown, the environment was able to mend itself. However, these modifications to the environment are only temporary. The observance of World Environment Day offers a stage upon which people can come together to take collective action. It serves to elevate the voices of participants and strengthen their agency to have an impact on change.
