LPU’s bachelor of arts’ student and India’s ace athlete Neeraj Chopra has created history yet again as he became the first athlete from the country to win a silver medal at the Athletics World Championships-2022. This occasion was ‘Men’s Javelin Throw final’ of the championship held at Hayward Field, Eugene (Oregon), the United States.
Neeraj clinched silver medal with a throw of 88.13 metres in the final. He finished second after defending champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, who won gold with a throw of 90.54m. Whereas, Olympic silver medal winner Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic won the bronze with 88.09m.
Ending the wait of several years, Neeraj has scripted history once again after winning historic Gold Medal only a year ago at Tokyo Olympics 2020. Then also, ending the long wait of 100 years, Neeraj Chopra created history by winning top in Javelin Throw competition of nations. Jubilant LPU bestowed a cash prize of Rs 50 Lakh on him, and also named one of the roads at the campus in his name as “Neeraj Marg”. The Government of India also awarded him with the highest national award of sports “Khel Ratna”.
While congratulating the ace athlete of the country and the university, and according to him best wishes for future endeavours as well, LPU Chancellor Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal described the win as a glorious moment. Dr Mittal invoked him to keep on glorifying the country with his incomparable prowess & proficiency.
Dr Mittal also shared: “It is indeed a great triumph made by one of our most distinguished students in the annals of Indian sports. Neeraj has made all of us proud by listing himself as the first male track and field athlete to win a silver medal for the country in the World Championships.”
Illustrative, prior to him, long-jump athlete Anju Bobby George of the country has won a “bronze” medal at World Championships.
