A group of LPU agriculture students are working on the restoration of a wetland through floating Island technology.
These students (Pardeep kumar, Keshav mehta, Chandana Pusapati, Anand Charvin, and Kiran) have already been nominated as Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan ambassadors after claiming the 1st Runners Up position at the Inter University National Competition on Water Resources Management, held at TERI in New Delhi a few months ago.
Continuing their work from the event, these students are determined to create 10 Floating Islands in the lake.
Folating islands technology is something that was earlier unheard of in India, but has become significant in the recent times in reference to the work being done in the Kanjli wetland. As a solution to revive the rapidly deteriorating lakes around the country, students of LPU have brought in the concept of Floating island technology.
It works on the principle of bio phytoremediation to clean the water in lakes and other water bodies and to remove the pollutants. It uses phytoremedial plants on an artificial island, whose roots host a wide range of bacteria that absorb heavy metals and trap pollutants in the biofilm.
The pilot project has been implemented in Kanjli, where a 100 sq feet island has been installed. This makes it the first ever Floating Island in India. This initiation not only provides hope for a better future for the rivers in India but also promises protection and conservation of the integrity of lakes and the whole aquatic ecosystem. This endeavor offers a span of substantial benefit to the community, environment and biodiversity on the whole.
