When calendars change to the month of December excitement takes over and delight can be felt in the air. It is that time we celebrate Christmas and prepare to start a new year with bliss. Talking about Christmas, the gifts, the music, the food, the trips are among the so many things we love about Christmas. It surely creates good moments. However how much do we really know about Christmas? Is it all about Santa and his gifts or the food and the music? Let this piece of writing take you through the significance of Christmas, let’s talk about Christmas.

The word Christmas is a combination of the words “Christ” and “mass”. Christ comes from the Greek word “Christós” that can be translated into English as “Messiah” and messiah meaning deliverer or saviour. This all comes down to the foundation of Christianity where Christ was given to be a sacrifice so that man’s sins are forgiven. So 25 December is a day set aside to reminisce the birth of the saviour according to Christianity. Yes ! We surprise our friends, family or anyone we’re close to with different gifts just as the saviour presented a gift of forgiveness. However we miss the bigger picture, we miss the most basic thing about the “giving”.

Giving, according to Christmas isn’t only about the people we know or agree with, it’s more about those we don’t know of and agree less with. Just as the saviour gave his life so that the human race may have the salvation it doesn’t deserve, Christmas is about giving those that can’t give back. It’s about providing wholeheartedly not to have something else in return but as an act of love. Surprise those that offend you, those that don’t expect from you and those that are needy with an act of sacrifice.

What can you probably give? Don’t you have enough money to buy expensive gifts? Worry not, it’s  not only about money. You can share whatever you cherish, be it your time, attention, advice and anything that comes to your heart. A phone call to someone distant, forgiving those that hurt you or it can be as simple as a smile is enough.
