LPU has emerged as “Overall Champions” among nation’s private universities in the first-ever edition of Khelo India University Games-2020. Bagging 23 Medals (9 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze Medals), LPU is ranked 6th among 175+ universities from across the country. Nearly 3500 university students of the country had battled for glory in a wide range of sporting events. LPU has defeated strong-footed government and private universities like Universities of Mumbai, Madras, Delhi, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and more. Inaugurated in February 2020 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the competitions came to a conclusion by crowning the winners of the inaugural edition.
The university students were given a platform to showcase their talents in a wide range of sporting events including Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Kabbadi, Rugby, Swimming, Table Tennis, Weight-Lifting, Wrestling and more. Our students participated in 11 games and won 9 Gold medals: 2 gold medals for weightlifting; 3 for Judo; and, one each in Wrestling, Boxing, Javelin Throw and Heptathlon. The Gold Medal Winner LPU students are weight-lifters Yumnum Khondonbi Chanu, Gurjeet; wrestler Rani Rana, Javelin thrower Shilpa, judo players Shiva Kumar, Anmol, Ritik Kumar and Boxer Ashutosh.
Congratulating the students on the historic win at the inaugural edition of the games, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal shared: “It is indeed a momentous moment for LPU Sports as our students have excelled over the top competitors from top institutions of the country. I congratulate all the mentors who guided the winners. Their and students’ hard work will certainly take them ahead along with their dreams to win the world.”
KIUG-2020 is the largest ever multi-discipline sports event conducted for university students across the country. This revolutionized form of the sports competition is sure to find more Olympians and robust talent from the educational institutions.
