The Department of Community Service & NSS volunteers at Lovely Professional University organized two-day state level “Youth Red Cross Day Celebrations” at LPU campus. It was held in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society in the memory of all-time great humanitarian and benevolent person of the Punjab state, Bhai Ghanaiya Jee.
In order to inculcate the spirit of humanitarianism among youth of the state, competitions under 5 categories of poem recitation; first aid; poster making; group song; and, folk song were organized. Near 30 prominent schools and colleges of the state participated to imbibe and depict the selfless doings of Bhai Ghainaiya Jee & Red Cross Society.
Bhai Ghanaiya Jee is known for pouring water into the mouths of all the wounded members of the battlefield, no matter whether they were Sikhs or fighting against the Sikhs. His life story is a befitting example of selfless service and he was a real precursor to the Red Cross.
LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal chaired the celebrations, where she awarded the winners in different categories. Mrs Mittal was accompanied by Senior officials of the Punjab Red Cross (Chandigarh) S. Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon, I.A.S. (Retd) and S Amarjeet Singh. Mrs Mittal invoked youth of Punjab to learn to live for others’ goodness.
Of the 30 prizes declared, BBK DAV College for women won maximum 6 prizes; Government Girls Sr Sec School Railway Mandi Hoshiarpur 5; Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan Amritsar 4; SD College Barnala and LPU 3 each; and, other winners included Government Brijindra College Faridkot, Govt Rajindra College Bathinda and C U Mohali.
