Have you ever wondered about the gender of the things you use daily? I bet not! Well, today I have a really interesting article for you guys to start your morning with.
Everyone will agree, I am sure, that learning Hindi is an ongoing challenge. Even those blessed blessed with it as their mother tongue can be found arguing about things like “Is water(paani) male or female”.
Don’t know about you, but I engage in such serious debates routinely. Here’s a list I’ve put together of words whose genders I am sure about! My friends from states where Hindi isn’t the first language and all my fellow Vertos from other countries who are trying to learn Hindi, this one’s specially for you.
Let’s start with water (paani). How do you say it, “Maine paani piya” or “Maine paani pii”? You see the difference! Water is male but rain (barish) is female. Example, “barish ho rahi hai”
Similarly, the following is a list of some things and their grammatical gender in Hindi.
You can have fun with your friends and make funny sentences.
1. Chair (kursi) – Female
2. Bed (bistar) – Male
3. Pen (kalam) – Male
4. Bag (bag) – Male
5. Wood (lakdi) – Female
6. Work (kaam) – Male
7. Electricity (bijli) – Female
8. Computer (computer) – Male
9. Slipper (chappal) – Female
10. Food (khana) – Male
11. Door (darwaza) – Male
12. Gun (bandook) – Female
13. Cloth (kapda) – Male
Now that you know, I am sure you guys will have fun experimenting.
Luego!
