On 14th November every year Children’s Day is celebrated in India on the occasion of India’s first prime minister’s birth anniversary. Pundit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, was lovingly ‘Chacha Nehru’ by children, of whom he was exceedingly fond. Nehru ji dedicated his birthday to a celebration of all children, a day for children to have fun and rejoice in.
Children’s Day was first celebrated in 1954. The idea of a universal Children’s Day was suggested by Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon and later it was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Earlier it was celebrated universally in the month of October but later on it was decided in 1959, that November 20th would be Children’s Day as it marked the anniversary day when the Declaration of the Child Rights was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly. The Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 was also signed on this same date. On this day various events and functions are conducted in schools/colleges/ universities and other educational institutes.
We,in India, celebrate Children’s Day on Pandit Jawaharlal’s Birthday because during his lifetime Pandit Jawaharlal worked tirelessly for the welfare of children. Soon after Independence he was enthusiastic to do something about the lacking progress in children’s education in India. He made 5 year plans that included free and primary education for all the children.
