Fifteen students from Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom recently concluded their participation in the month-long ‘Study India Programme (SIP)’ at Lovely Professional University (LPU). The exchange program successfully facilitated a rich cultural exchange between the UK and India, as it provided the visiting students with a unique opportunity to learn about the distinctive aspects of India and LPU, as well as fostering an appreciation for Indian culture.
UK students had the opportunity to participate in various interactive activities and teachings organized by LPU. They attended classes on Hindi language, Indian cooking, dances, crafts, politics, sociology, and Yoga. Workshops on block & foil printing, fabric identification, coloration, dyeing, and a fashion week were also organized. Moreover, the students had the chance to experience Indian festivals such as Holi, Baisakhi, Id, Ram Navami, and more.
As part of the concluding programme, LPU’s Division of International Affairs organized a fashion show where the UK students showcased a range of traditional Indian attire. Designed by students and faculty members from LPU’s School of Fashion Design, the fashion parade featured Punjabi, South Indian, Rajasthani, Haryanvi, and other state-related attire, representing diverse ceremonial occasions in India.
The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Amandeep Grewal, the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Deputy High Commission India (Chandigarh). Mr. Grewal commended the study environment and infrastructure at LPU and expressed his delight at seeing students from the UK dressed in different Indian attires, showcasing the rich textile heritage of India.
Dr. Aman Mittal, the Vice President LPU, expressed his enthusiasm for the event. He stated, “It was an honour to host these students from the UK and showcase the rich cultural heritage of India. We hope they have gained new insights and experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.” Dr. Mittal also expressed his desire to welcome more students from developed countries in the future, as LPU strives to impart the best of India to young minds.
Staffordshire University, known for its excellence in education, has received numerous accolades and recognition. It is ranked 2nd in the UK for Quality Education (Sustainable Development Goal 4) by Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings- 2023 and is acknowledged for its career prospects as per the Student Choice Awards 2023.
The exchange programme also included visits to significant places including the Golden Temple & Wagah Border in Amritsar (Punjab), Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh), Agra (Uttar Pradesh), and industrial visits. The students thoroughly enjoyed their time in India and were presented with Indian dresses as a gift from the university. They also had the opportunity to learn the art of Juggad (Make-Shifter) as part of the business aspect of their visit.
