A patent application is a techno-legal document that intends to protect an invention and requires the patent filers to be well-versed with both technology and the law. Patent agents do the drafting and filing of patent applications. To be a patent agent, one needs to clear the Indian Patent Agent Examination conducted by the Indian Patent Office (IPO), every year. This requires thorough knowledge of Indian Patent Act 1970, patent claims drafting skills and interpretation abilities. After qualifying examination, professionals can start practicing as patent agents and can help corporates and individuals for filing patents.

For the Patent Agent Exam preparation, a short-term course on Patent Agent Exam Training was organized by Human Resource Development Center & IPR Cell, Division of Research and Development, Lovely Professional University from April 10 to April 15, 2023 to develop the skill and understanding of the pattern and analysis of the Patent Agent Exam, Fundamentals of the Indian Patent Law and Drafting of a patent application.

Prof.(Dr.) Monica Gulati, Executive Dean, Research & Development, LPU in her inaugural address emphasized the need for Patent Filing and clearing of Patent Agent Exam. She congratulated the organizing team for organizing program on an agenda of Patent Agent Exam training.

The program was conducted by seasoned Subject Matter Experts Dr. Runjhun Tandon, Associate Professor & Deputy Dean, IPR cell, LPU; Ms. Deepa ES, Managing Associate Patent and Trade Mark Attorney, Origiin IP Solutions LLP and Mr. Kuldeep Singh, Officer, IPR Cell LPU. Resource persons deliberated on the basics of patent act and types of IPR Indian Patent, Paris convention, TRIPS, Berne and PCT filing, filing system and international patent filing system, criteria of patentability, anticipation and section 3 and 4 licensing and compulsory licensing, patent searching and types of patent searches, pre grant and post grant opposition, infringement, powers of controller patent drafting and tips of relevant patent drafting tips and hands on practice.

In the valedictory address, the program convener Dr. Sunaina Ahuja, Professor & Dean and Head-HRDC, LPU revealed the opportunity to upgrade career in patent filing with new aspects. She emphasized the need of starting industry-oriented courses and opening some platforms for entrepreneurs to learn about emerging trends in IPR. She appreciated the Organizing committee, Resource Panel and participants for working together on a futuristic agenda of IPR. She emphasized that the Short Term Courses organized as outreach training programs are envisioned to upskill participants of Lovely Professional University and public at large and this course was successful in meeting the said objectives. She also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the intellectual capital and appreciated the organizing team for organizing a meaningful workshop, successful in meeting participants’ expectations.

Feedback was solicited from the participants in response to which they appreciated the gesture shown by the LPU-HRDC in terms of choice of Subject Matter Experts and curriculum framed to make them clear about the Patent Agent Exam Preparation.

The coordinator of the program Dr. Savita Gupta, Professor and Head-Department of Faculty Development-HRDC, LPU presented the Program Report by sharing the ‘THINK BIG’ vision of LPU which empowered them to organize the Short Term Course on Patent Agent Exam Training and its Applications and congratulated the participants for successful completion of the program. Dr. Runjhun Tandon, Associate Professor & Deputy Dean, IPR cell, LPU proposed the formal vote of thanks.
