Internationally acclaimed leader in ‘Stroke Medicine’, the Head of Sydney Brain Centre, Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research; Dr. Mark William Parsons visited Lovely Professional University (LPU), where he signed an important Memorandum of Understanding with the university.
Interacting with students, faculty and staff-members at LPU’s Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium; Dr Parson shared the immense future of Machine and Deep Learning in medical sciences. He talked about various symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment of and recovery, prevention from the ‘brain-stroke’. He summarized for a quick understanding; the main stroke symptoms can be remembered with the word ‘FAST’, by grasping trouble with Face, Arms, Speech, and the last ‘Time’- to take the patient to the doctor immediately.
While signing important MoUs; Dr Parsons also announced the valued ‘Mark William Parsons’ Scholarship for empowering the women in ‘STEM’, worth Rs. One Lakh per year for LPU’s two girl students, on merit cum means basis, for consecutive five years w.e.f 2024.
Welcoming the elite medical scientist from Sydney, LPU’s Founder Chancellor & Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal shared that effective experimentation is essential to do meaningful research. He congratulated all at LPU for MoU signing; setting up of the Centre of Excellence; and, instituting of scholarships for women students. Adding Dr Mittal said, “Such initiatives are instrumental in creating growth oriented road map in today’s competitive world.” Dr Mittal also forwarded that in an era of enhance research works, LPU ever stays committed to add value and research focused education, under such global collaborations.
On a visit of two days, Dr Parsons held deliberations with LPU’s various School and Division Heads, and also visited the Animal House under School of Pharmaceutical Sciences; the Agricultural Farms of the School of Agriculture; School of Bioengineering & Biosciences; and, the Centre of Instrumental Facilities. Here, the final draft of the MoU was crafted after having mutual discussions on the modalities; joint PhD program; projects on neuro-image sensing; establishment of Parsons Neuroscience Centre of Excellence; organization of series of ‘Hackathons for students, and more.
In addition, important deliberations on extension of MoU with the University of South Wales; New Castle; and other Australian Universities were done, which included International student exchange programme, on 2+2 Model.
Illustrative, the Ingham Institute is home to over 350 researchers across 42 research groups such as cancer, population health, childhood development, brain injury and diabetes. It conducts world-leading medical research, creating everyday miracle treatments to let all in the world live healthier, longer, and happier lives. In this regard, the collaborations are with top universities of the world, including those of the USA, Japan, China, India.
