Hostel life is a bittersweet experience. It goes from missing our home every single day to loving our hostel mates for making our hostel life worth remembering; from constant nagging our roommates to becoming best buddies.
Now, some of us don’t believe in living like slobs, and some even suffer from OCD, a bit, and for them it is hard to adjust to other people’s mess. Such kindred spirits will relate to these 10 issues we face while living in a hostel.
-
No matter how much you keep ‘your side’ clean, your roommate’s side will always give you a headache: And you can’t do anything about it except reminding them every once in a while to clean up. But it just bounces off their heads, into some purgatory of unwanted advice.
-
While you like to be organised, your roommate might believe in dumping everything on ‘the chair’: We hostellers are all familiar with ‘the chair’ that becomes invisible under the heap of everything that comes out of the almirah, only to be dumped on it.
-
You are always the first one to take a shower: And to accomplish it, you have to be the sweeper first, and clean up the mess from the day before.
-
Your roommates do not believe in cleaning the room themselves : And because you cannot stand the sight of your room in shambles, all the work falls on your shoulders. You become habitual of sweeping and mopping every other day because the room is such a mess that you cannot wait for the maid to arrive on the assigned day and leave the room dirty till then.
-
Dust? Where?: Ummm..like everywhere. Pick up the rag already! Where is the rag, you ask? Umm..in this mess?? Who knows?
-
That one person who uses the wash basin to dump their leftovers: They are unfamiliar with the utilization of trash cans and think that their leftovers will easily flow from the small drain holes of the washbasin, leading to a blockage most of the time.
-
Not to forget those ‘friends of friends’ who come and shove themselves on your bed : It’s rude to ask people to not sit on your bed, but it’s difficult to stand someone who jumps on your properly made-up bed and ruins it…. and puts dirty feet inside YOUR blanket!!
-
The mess is always a very messy affair, no matter what: Table manners? Hygiene? What do they have to do with the food that humans devour?
-
And there are always one or two resident dogs in your hostel :Who love poking their noses into rooms or going through the treasure in the trash cans. They are fond of tearing up bin bags and so they can cause the garbage to be scattered all over the hostel hallways.
-
But regardless of everything, you discover one day that you have instinctively started calling it home : After a tiring day of college, or work, the place you return to becomes home and the word ‘home’ starts popping out of your mouth automatically when you refer to your hostel – such is the fabulous feeling of living in a hostel.
