In recent years, there has been a drastic change in society’s attitude to diet. Like everything else, convenience has become the governing factor here as well. We grow up eating food that our family prepares for us and we never have to worry about the standards or quality of that food. But when we become the person who gets to make the choice, we often fail. For students and young working people, whatever is time and cost effective, is quite simply the best. Spending long hours cramming for a physics exam or reaching home tired from a stressful day at work, we tend to prefer processed food, because it is quick, simple and seems close to real food. In reality, it is anything but. Processed food exactly means – preserved, prepared food that is canned and are readily consumable. It may be your life savior at times but here are 8 reasons you should avoid processed food:

  1. It is very high in fructose corn syrup and sugar –  we all know how empty calories can have devastating effects on our metabolism.

  2. It leads to overconsumption of food as it is hyper rewarding.

  3. When you eat processed food, you are eating all sorts of artificial ingredients – basically chemicals.

  4. It has been proved that many people get seriously addicted to processed food and suffer from long term illness.

  5. They have refined carbohydrates which are complex molecules of carbohydrate that take more time for digestion and drive your digestive system at abnormal rates.

  6. And when it comes to the nutritive value, they’ve got nothing.

  7. They are low in fibre which is a necessary component of any diet.

  8. Containing excessive amount of Omega-6-fatty acids, they are high in processed oils and trans fat.
