The Student Welfare Wing at Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized an awakening seminar on ‘Air Pollution’, and actions against its worst impact upon common people. This awareness programme was held at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium in association with ‘Lungs Care Foundation (LCF) & Doctors for Clean Air and Climate Action (DFCA)’ of the country. The team mainly based on elite doctors presented an elaborated perceptive to control the pollution problem in the state and the country.
The key objective of the event was that all should realize that ‘Air Pollution’ is a national health emergency. It is a silent killer, taking the lives of millions of people across the World and causing many chronic health issues.
During the event a declaration on clean air was made by the team at LPU campus to accept that clean air is a civil right for every citizen; build teams for action; communicate all widely for it; develop capacity among medical professionals; and engage multiple stakeholders through specifically created action groups. Talking about the pollution problem through unwanted smoke in the state through stubble burning, the team presented impactful data that can endanger human life at large.
The team comprised Dr. Carmin Uppal-Programme Manager, DFCA, who talked about various initiatives and ways out for the looming problem. State President Dr P S Bakshi who informed about regional sources of air pollution and its health impacts. Founder trustee of LCF, Rajeev Khurana wanted all to take suitable action against the air pollution right now to forward the gift of “clean air” to next generations. It was also suggested that many-many lakhs of rupees are wasted indirectly on burning otherwise very useful stubble.
The team also suggested productive outcomes from stubble instead of its wasteful burning. It was suggested that it can be helpful in the Paper Industry; for producing Ethanol and other chemicals; fodder for animals in days of scarcity out of season; and, also to maintain the fertility of the soil. Thus, the elite speakers sensitized and stimulated students to be protagonists against pollution. In this regard, and also, keeping in view Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Clean India’, awakened LPU students agreed to be up to the expectations of the visiting team.
