As per the Hindu calendar, the day when Raksha Bandhan is celebrated is the full moon day that falls in the month of Shraavana. It is also called Sawana Purnima. This year in 2021, Raksha Bandhan falls on August 22. Raksha Bandhan, a typical Indian festival, is everything about celebrating the bond that exists between families. We hear of Raksha Bandhan; the first visual that comes to our mind is the precious memories of this beautiful day with our siblings and extended family. Traditionally, Rakhi symbolized the bond between siblings, but it has extended to so much more than that in the modern era. Now it is a way to celebrate the love and bond between families and friends by playing dress-up, eating, having fun, and making memories.
Preparations for this auspicious day start few days before the actual day. Sisters start finding the best Rakhi, and some also start applying mehndi on their hands. On the other side, the brother looks for the best return gift for Rakhi. The loving sisters decorate the Rakhi thali with Diya, kumkum, some sweets, and a beautiful Rakhi. All the proceedings are followed depending on the Mahratta, which is the auspicious time according to the Indian calendar. This is the time when boys get themselves seated, and sister lights up Diya. She then does aarti and applies the kumkum tikka after sprinkling rice grains over his brother. Later on, both of them share sweet as well as a gift between themselves.
The strong bond of love and care between all brothers and sisters is given high honour on this day. This is a day when all sisters tie a Rakhi in their brother’s wrist to protect against all kinds of evil by tying a sacred thread. A Rakhi is not only a small piece of thread but has in it a lot of values. But you should keep in mind that it is not the day only for brothers and sisters but for all those people who love each other immensely. It is for those people who want to protect each other from all kinds of hurdles. Rakhi celebration is for all, and blood relations are not that important.
