“One has to work hard, be committed, and to nurture desire slowly but surely.” – Director, Sangita Gupta

On 31 August 2016, the fifth day of the  Natya Mahotsav being held at Lovely Professional University, the artists of Roopak Kala Manch (Mohali) enacted the Punjabi play ‘Maut Di Teesi’. The play carried a message for the youth that success only comes to those who nourish their dreams, and don’t give up. The play has been translated from Konkani into Punjabi by Dr. Atamjit, and directed by Sangeeta Gupta.

The storyline of ‘Maut Di Teesi’ traces the loneliness and disillusionment experienced by a young man who meets disappointment in his professional and personal life. Eventually, he tries to commit suicide, an easy out that young people today seem icreasingly wont to take. Director Sangita Gupta shared, “Our message is that there are no shortcuts. One has to work hard, be committed, and to nurture desire slowly but surely.”

As per the story of the play, a boy ‘Sarvesh’ finds himself failing at every front in life. He comes across a newspaper advertisement by a person who claims to find a solution to any problem in the world. The boy readily goes and shares all his troubles with him, and he in turn ends up giving him a rather strange solution. Sarvesh disagrees at first but eventually gives in. This is the turning point of the entire story and from here, it reaches an epiphany. Sarvesh jumps into a river to die but somehow comes out alive. Now, he is a firm man and admits, “I have learnt to live through struggling waves and fish in the river.”

The last and sixth play to be staged at LPU on 2nd September is “Udhara Pati” by the artists of Sarthak Rangmanch, Patiala.
