Machine Learning Using Python opens a gateway to a dynamic world of possibilities, revolutionizing how we understand, interpret, and harness data. In this transformative synergy of cutting-edge technology, Python emerges as the language of choice, seamlessly blending elegance and efficiency. Python’s intuitive syntax and extensive libraries empower enthusiasts and professionals alike to delve into the intricate realm of machine learning with unparalleled ease. In this context, Human Resource Development Center and the School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, LPU organized a Short-Term Course on Machine Learning Using Python w.e.f. Dec. 18-23, 2023. The course aimed at enhancing the skills in analysing engineering problems and conducting COVID-19 data analysis, NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib and transforming raw data into actionable insights by using Python.

The Resource Panel included Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, Pro-Vice Chancellor, LPU, Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani, Head and Professor, SEEE, LPU, Dr. Deepika Ghai, Assistant Professor, SEEE, LPU and Dr. Gurleen Kaur Walia, Assistant Professor, SEEE, LPU. Through hands-on experiences, they enabled the participants to navigate the intricate landscape of algorithms, unravelling the complexities of predictive analytics, classification, and pattern recognition. They also delved into advanced areas like NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib, deep neural networks, convolutional neural networks, predictive analytics, classification, and pattern recognition.

Day 1 – December 18, 2023: A Journey Begins: The inaugural session, orchestrated by Dr. Lovi Raj Gupta, Pro-Vice Chancellor of LPU, wasn’t merely an opening ceremony, it was the ignition of a transformative journey. Dr. Gupta delivered a profound course target, motivation, and gist, setting the intellectual tone for the entire week. Dr. Gurleen Kaur Walia kicked off the technical sessions covering Python fundamentals. The day reached its zenith with hands-on sessions led by Dr. Deepika Ghai and Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani, culminating in a exciting revision and a mini-project on analysing engineering problems using Python.

Day 2 – December 19, 2023: Navigating the Pythonic Waters: Dr. Deepika Ghai, a maestro in the Pythonic realm, guided participants through the intricacies of NumPy for array processing, fostering a hands-on experience that transcended theoretical boundaries. Afternoon sessions, skilfully led by Dr. Ghai, covered Pandas for data manipulation, Matplotlib for data visualization, and a captivating mini-project focusing on COVID-19 data analysis.

Day 3 – December 20, 2023: Unravelling Image Processing: Dr. Deepika Ghai continued her virtuosity, delving into the nuances of images as data, image enhancement, and filtering techniques. Participants embarked on a tactile journey under the guidance of Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani, exploring morphological operations, image feature extraction, and segmentation. The day reached its zenith with a mini-project, opening websites using hand gestures and conducting plant leaf image pre-processing.

Day 4 – December 21, 2023: Embarking on Code-driven journey with Machine Learning: Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani spearheaded discussions on machine learning, unravelling the mysteries of supervised learning techniques. The afternoon sessions delved into unsupervised learning algorithms, artificial neural networks, and a mini-project on cancer detection, paving the way for participants to navigate the vast landscape of machine learning.

Day 5 – December 22, 2023: Decoding the Essence of Artificial Intelligence: Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani demystified artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. The day unfolded with an exploration of deep neural networks, convolutional neural networks (CNN), and advanced concepts. Participants engaged in a mesmerizing mini-project, applying CNN, data augmentation, and transfer learning to detect plant diseases.

Day 6 – December 23, 2023: Culmination of Knowledge into Action: The final day focused on the practical implementation of individual project, guided by Dr. Bhavesh Kumar C. Dharmani. It culminated in a showcase of final projects, including a compelling performance comparison of various machine learning algorithms for heart disease detection and innovative ensemble approaches using deep learning.

Each day unfolded as a chapter in a narrative of knowledge, innovation, and practical application, leaving participants enriched with skills and insights that will resonate far beyond the boundaries of this impactful short-term course. Subject Matter Expert strategically incorporated collaborative learning techniques, including demonstrations and case-based teaching, fostering an engaging and interactive learning environment. Post-training evaluation plays a pivotal role in assessing the effectiveness of a learning program. In this context, two types of evaluation methods were employed it was MCQ and project-based. The presentation of the project tested participants’ ability to apply a comparison of various machine learning algorithms for heart disease detection and innovative ensemble approaches using deep learning.

The course concluded with a feedback and valedictory session, where participants expressed their gratitude for the comprehensive learning experience. Team HRDC and the Resource Panel were lauded for orchestrating a course that not only imparted knowledge but also provided a platform for hands-on application.
