For a freshman, college can seem scary, huge, and foreboding. It’s a fresh start! A new kind of “freedom.” College isn’t that scary, and for the most part, it’s really fun! Here are some of the tips to get you through the challenges of your Freshman year.
Roommates
Whether you like your roommate or not, you will unquestionably fight with them one day. Even if you’re sharing your room with your best friend, it’s hard to adjust to someone. You’re always around them, and at times, you just need to be alone.
- Study in the library, instead of your room.
- If you’re fighting, talk things out calmly, and hear them out.
- Try to be respectful of your roommate’s space.
- Make friends with lots of people.
Class work
College is fun, but always remember you’re not there just to party. Do not flunk your classes unnecessarily. Find the right balance of fun and college. Don’t miss class or extracurricular activity, either.
Avoiding the Freshman Fifteen
Unfortunately, the freshman fifteen is a fact. You may not gain 15 pounds, but surely a substantial weight in the first year of college, by combining late nights of studying, unlimited food in the hostels, restaurants, and less workout.
Here are a few ways to maintain your weight:
- At night, eat something healthy when you’re studying, like almonds.
- Don’t overeat in the cafeteria.
- Don’t order or take away all the time.
- Keep working out.
Dating
During your first year, it is not advisable to get into a serious relationship. If you are going into college single, chances are you may end up liking someone. One should avoid dating in the first year to make a secure group of friends.
While this is good advice, some may not follow it. Just remember: be safe and never go anywhere if you feel uncomfortable. Always have your friends watch your back.
Getting involved
The best way to make friends is to get involved in extracurricular activities at university. Some people join unions and communities, but if that’s not your cup of tea, you can spend some time spent on your extra activities. You may join some clubs, even if you don’t attend their meetings.
No matter what, your freshman year will be a blast. As long as you follow these tips, you’ll have an incredibly successful Freshman year experience!
