“Eyes on Diabetes” has been chosen as the theme for this year’s celebration of World Health Day 2016. On this day a large number of medical organizations highlighted the fact that 25% of diabetes patients do not discuss eye complications with their healthcare professionals. Despite the fact that vision loss is one of the fastest showing symptom in the case of diabetes. World Diabetes Day is a primary global awareness campaign in which awareness about diabetes mellitus is conducted to educate the citizens. This campaign is led by Indian Diabetes Federation (IDF). This day marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who in association with Charles Best, John James, and Rickard Macleod, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922.

Every year they select a particular theme and every medical institution of the country promotes it by providing facilities related to the theme. The following themes have been emphasized in the last few year on this day,  – 2013: Protect our Future: Diabetes Education and Prevention;  2014: Go Blue for Breakfast; and  2015: Healthy Eating.

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the affected suffers from an insufficient amount of the hormone called insulin, as the body is unable to produce the required quantity. But when properly treated, people suffering from the disease can live a long and healthy life. This day promotes the same message in the society.
