I was reading the other day about the Indian economy and how small scale businesses from the different sectors help in its increase and decrease and the future state. Every bit of this is true. There are three kinds of countries. First are developed countries like the USA, second the developing countries like India and third, the underdeveloped countries. From the past decade, India has become the biggest market for the whole world. Recently I attended an entrepreneurship boot camp, here in LPU called Startup Punjab. It was all about how to develop startups and how to work upon them with the local people and their businesses to make some good fortune out of it. I got a chance to meet many entrepreneurs, from Punjab as well as from the country. It was really a great brainstorming session.
There is one potential market India, which has immense future implications and prospects. It was made famous by the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi in the past as a movement. Yes, I am talking about Khadi. Khadi has been around for hundreds of years. Its influence on the customs of our country is remarkable. Mahatma Gandhi and his spinning wheel is a remembrance to it. He used to spin his own Khadi.
In the year 2017, there were 460,000 workers under khadi employment. There was a rise in production from 30% to 34% from 2016-2017. The rate is increasing as the people are getting more aware to use country-made products. Our prime minister’s scheme of: “Make in India” has brought in more concentration to the Khadi department.
So there are various reasons why one should consider Khadi:
- Directly helps in the better drive for economy. The more people come for the acceptance of Khadi, the more is the economy in a better state. Western companies are taking up the whole market and it’s our time to cash back in on Khadi.
- Use of khadi will not only help the Cotton farmers it will also help the ironsmiths for making spindles or carpenters for that cause. Employment will be given to unskilled workers so that they can be skilled in this easy task of spinning.
- Khadi is a fabric which suitable for all type of skins
- Doctors prefer Khadi to be worn for daily use because it helps the skin feel airy. Some schools in India have already adopted Khadi uniforms.
- Khadi clothes are highly durable and really strong.
Given that, the benefits of khadi are really promising. I guess it’s our time to revive the Khadi movement, to carry in the legacy lent out by Mahatma Gandhi for the betterment of sectors of society and healthy life.
Go Swadeshi!
