* Along with Overall Archery Championship, LPU contingent won 42 Medal haul including 20 Gold, 14 Silver & 8 Bronze medals

Lovely Professional University (LPU) has lifted the Overall First Runner Up Trophy at Khelo India University Games (KIUG)-2023 recently held in Assam. Along with the Overall Archery Championship trophy, LPU contingent has won a haul of 42 Medals including 20 Gold, 14 Silver and 8 Bronze from nine sports competitions.

The 11-Day multisport meet of the country- ‘KIUG 2023’ was held in its 4th edition across India’s seven north-eastern states from February 19 to 29th 2024. It was conducted by the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which promotes and encourages sports at the grassroots level. On the basis of these games and of their enthralling performances, tens of the LPU’s sportsmen and women are vying for participation in forthcoming Olympic Games to be held in Paris, this year.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had addressed the Games, which was inaugurated by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur in Guwahati.  

Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) & Founder Chancellor of LPU, Dr Ashok Kumar Mittal congratulated all the participants of the games and their mentors skillful students for bringing laurels to the university. Dr Mittal further inspired them to be top winners in all of their future national-international competitions, as well.

LPU sportsmen-women won nine medals in Archery including 4 Gold, 4 Silver & 1 Bronze; eight in Judo including 5 Gold, 1 Silver & 2 Bronze; six in Boxing including 2 Gold, 1 Silver & 3 Bronze; six in Wrestling including 2 Gold, 3 Silver & 1 Bronze; five in Athletics including 4 Gold & 1 Silver; three in Weightlifting including 1Gold, 1 Silver & 1 Bronze; two Gold in Shooting; 2 Silver in Fencing; and one Silver in Yogasana. GNDU Amritsar got the third place in the medal tally.

LPU archers won ‘Overall Archery Championship trophy for competitions in the both Men & Women categories for Re-curve & Compound events. All of them displayed the finest archery skills. In addition, LPU sports persons won 2nd Runner up trophy in weightlifting; and, Runners up in both Wrestling and Athletics.

The KIUG games were operated in a team championship format, wherein the medals earned by individual athletes contribute to the overall medal tally of their respective universities. Over 200 Indian universities competed for the KIUG title. Around 4,500 athletes strived for 822 medals, including 245 gold, 245 silver and 332 bronze – in 20 sports.
