If you are one of those who know ‘The Magic Flute’ by Mozart or listen to ‘Fidelio’ by Beethoven, you’re probably familiar with the Opera. Many of you probably would have watched a theatre or movie version of ‘The Phantom of Opera’, which is also written in an operatic structure. This genre of music has a great following around the world, among those devoted to the rawness and authenticity of musicals, and every year on 8th February, Opera Day is celebrated by them.
This day has a special significance in the pages of history. On this day in 1735, the first opera performance was staged in the US – an English ballad called “Flora”. Held in Charleston, South Carolina in a makeshift theatre, the performance was well received and the opera became so popular that only a year later the first Opera House was inaugurated in the US.
On Opera Day, every year performances and musicals are organised all around the globe, dedicated to Opera Legends. The day is observed to encourage people to enjoy and keep this art form alive.
